Library Services

Birmingham Library Services have a range of offers for citizens across the city. The service has 36 Community Libraries , a Mobile Library service and offer a Library Service at Home.

The Library of Birmingham is one of the largest and most important public libraries in the world. It provides a showcase for Birmingham's internationally important collections of archives, photography and rare books. Facilities include a state-of-the-art gallery space, opening up public access to the collections. This is alongside dedicated children's and teenager collections. 

Other facilities include a flexible studio theatre, an outdoor amphitheatre and other informal performance spaces and dedicated spaces for children and teenagers.

There are also rooms for hire as well as support for business and learning sections.

The service deliver books and other library materials to people who find it hard to leave their homes without help. The service is for people unable to leave your home without help due to:

  • disability
  • illness
  • mobility
  • frailty

Carers who cannot visit their local library due to individual circumstances may also apply.

The free service is provided by dedicated and trained library staff and enables Birmingham citizens to continue reading.

The eLibrary service offers access to a great collection of eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers, free for you to download to your computer or device. The service uses 2 apps - BorrowBox and OverDrive. To find out more how these work and to join see the eLibrary's webpage.

You can use your existing library card or join online if you don't already have a library card.

Everyone is welcome to join the Mobile Library. You can register with us or you can use your existing Birmingham library card on the vehicle. You can borrow a maximum of 10 items at any one time (including items borrowed from our other libraries).

The Mobile Library vehicle carries over 3,500 items of stock for adults, young people and children of all ages. The stock is changed frequently and new items are added regularly. Reservation of books for the mobile library is free.

Connected Communities - Home & Money Advice

Connected Communities is Birmingham City Council's approach to ensure no one is left behind by:

  • Keeping support available locally
  • Making services easy to access
  • Working with trusted partners
  • Helping early, before problems get worse

There is support available through our trusted partners Citizen Advice Birmingham and Birmingham Settlement, for face-to-face benefits, debt and money advice. 

Appointments are free, confidential and pre-booked only. Walk-ins cannot be seen on the same day.
