Planning your Journey

TFWM’s website provides a journey planner that includes a mobility options section. This allows you to plan public transport based on criteria such as being unable to use stairs, avoid walking or requiring wheelchair accessible vehicles. It also providers walking and cycling options for travelling for those who it is appropriate for.

The site also has information on how discount and free travel passes for older and disabled people can applied for.

When travelling to a location, it is always best to check before you travel if you need to rely on equipment and/or support, both at the venue and if possible for the transport (though this is not always realistic for public transport).

So for example, if you were taking a trip to a swimming pool as a wheel chair user by taxi, on the day of travel, or the day before if a trip early in the day, check with the taxi company that the right type of taxi has been booked.

For places like a leisure centre it is always advisable to check that the lift into the swimming pool is working and that staff who are trained to use all the equipment are on the rota to work and will be available. While disappointing to find that staff sickness or equipment malfunction prevents your trip, it is better to find out before you travel rather than when you arrive.
