Huntington’s Disease Association - Specialist Huntington’s Disease service
#Prevention and Communities Grants Programme
The Huntington’s Disease Association has provided support to the HD community in Birmingham for over 50 years through its local Specialist Huntington’s Disease Advisory (SHDA) service.
This service is available to all Birmingham city council residents affected by Huntington’s disease, including, but not limited to, those who are symptomatic, those at risk, carers/ family members/ support network and other health and social care professionals. We help prevent crises, and reduces isolation while proactively challenging the stigma that still surrounds the disease.
Our proactive approach also helps reduce the dependency on other services.
It does this by providing,
- Direct support,
- Training to other health and social care professionals,
- Coordination of other services,
- Advocacy at multidisciplinary meetings
- Support at Huntington’s disease clinics.
As a result of this people affected by Huntington’s disease:
- Have a better understanding of Huntington’s disease.
- Feel emotionally supported.
- Feel less isolated.
- Feel better able to cope with their situation
Anyone can make a referral (including self-referral) by calling or emailing Poppy.
