Open Theatre Company
Open Theatre uses nonverbal physical theatre to collaborate with young people with learning disabilities, creating quality art which reflects and celebrates their unique creativity.
We have a range of out of school groups supporting young artists with learning disabilities in their professional career development in the arts:
- Friday Group (ages 16 – 25) – a flexible learning environment for young people with identified learning needs, focussed on developing creative professional skills through real-world creative projects (Fridays 10am – 2pm)
- OneOfAKind – a group of young artists with learning disabilities who make quality art together (Thursday evenings)
- Unbounded Solihull (Thursdays 6 – 8pm) – weekly nonverbal physical theatre group for young people aged 12 – 19 with disabilities. Participants develop their creative skills and gain the confidence needed to create quality art as they move towards adulthood and employment.
- Open MAC – an out of school enrichment group for children with learning disabilities (ages 8 – 14) and their families, which runs at the Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) on Wednesday evenings. The aim of the group is to provide children with learning disabilities an opportunity to participate in the arts and to reduce social isolation for these children.
We work in special schools and alternative provisions to explore the creativity of young people with learning disabilities. We also work with organisations and practitioners which young people with learning disabilities find hard to reach, so they can be more inclusive, accessible and collaborative.
